Storm Damage and Your Roof: What Columbus Homeowners Should Know

The Chattahoochee Valley gets its share of severe weather, and roofs take the brunt of it. The tricky part is that a lot of storm damage does not show up from the driveway.

What storm and hail damage looks like

  • Bruised shingles and lost granules, often only visible up close.
  • Missing or lifted shingles after high winds.
  • Dented flashing, vents and gutters.
  • Leaks and interior water spots that show up days later.

If a storm rolls through, it is worth a free inspection even if everything looks normal from below. We get on the roof and give you a straight answer.

Storm season in the Chattahoochee Valley

Columbus sits in one of the more storm-active corners of Georgia and Alabama. In a recent 12-month stretch the National Weather Service put the Columbus area under severe-weather warnings more than 70 times, and Doppler radar detected hail near the city on well over 100 occasions. Knowing when the risk peaks helps you catch roof damage early, while a claim can still cover it.

SeasonWhat to watch for on your roof
Spring (Mar–May)Peak severe season. Large hail, damaging straight-line winds and tornadoes as cold fronts slam into Gulf moisture.
Summer (Jun–Aug)Near-daily afternoon thunderstorms and heavy downpours (August is the wettest month) with gusts that lift and crack shingles.
Late summer & fall (Aug–Oct)Remnants of Gulf hurricanes and tropical storms (Fred, Helene) push inland to the Valley with wind and flooding rain.
Winter (Dec–Feb)Milder, but a strong front can still bring gusty wind and rain that finds any weak flashing.

Straight-line winds here can top 100 mph, so after any strong storm it is worth a free look even if the roof seems fine from the ground. Much of the worst hail and wind damage is not visible from the driveway, and it often qualifies for an insurance claim.
